Brighten up the dark days by getting active

Longer evenings and colder weather can put a dampener on your mood, but you can change that. It’s natural to become a little sluggish at this time of year. The outside world seems cold and dark, and that can be reflected in our mood.
However, allowing our mood to match the season can see us easily slip into feelings of depression and this can have an adverse effect on our mental and physical well-being.
There are ways to combat that feeling though, and they don’t include throwing some of your hard-earned money away on a pumpkin spice latte. Simply by getting out and getting active, your mood can lift and you’ll feel much better and able to face whatever the season has to throw at you – and it’s free.
There is an old saying that there is no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothing. The sun can shine very brightly on the coldest days, so while the skies are still clear, wrap up warm and get active. You don’t have to a super fit marathon runner to get active on a cold day. Just start off with a brisk walk and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your heart rate increases and you start to warm up. You’ll have the added bonus of breathing in some nice fresh air unlike the stale, recirculated air in your house of apartment. If you are walking or running in the darker evenings, make sure to wear hi-vis gear too.
Getting out and about also have social benefits too. You may run into friends and neighbors and it is proven that interacting with others can also greatly benefit our mental health.
