Eating Habits That Interrupt Our Quality Sleep

When you’re lying awake at night with a case of insomnia, you always end up asking yourself why. Yes, it’s true that if you’re going through a stressful time at work or on your life, the anxiety will keep you up at night. However, if that’s not the case, you should also take into account your eating habits, as maybe one of them is affecting your sleep schedule. Here are some examples of bad eating habits that can actually influence your insomnia:

  • Eating too close to bedtime: your body works during digestion, and if you eat too close to the time you’re supposed to be going to sleep, you’re making it work overnight. Your body needs to rest, which means try to have your meals with enough time that your body can complete digestion before bed. That way you will sleep better and feel more rested in the morning.
  • Spicy meals: whilst spicy food is delicious and offers many health benefits, it’s not a good idea to have it before you sleep. Spicy food usually is a bit of work for your body to process, and if you have to lie down and sleep right after eating it, might result in some digestive problems. From heartburn to stomach ache, better not to eat anything spicy before bed.
  • Fatty foods: again, these aren’t necessarily unhealthy foods for your body. You need fatty foods in your diet. However, maybe you should avoid having them at night. Fatty foods require more acid to break down and process, so eating them before you go to sleep almost guarantees stomach issues.
  • Foods rich in protein: whilst protein is good for your body, foods that are high in protein aren’t ideal at night. Your body requires a lot of work to process protein, so it would be exhausted after having to spend all night digesting it.

Of course, you can also include caffeine based foods after lunch and alcohol on this list. It’s important to be aware of the influence nutrition and bad habits can have on your sleeping hygiene. In a way, it gives you more control over a situation that tends to leave people feeling useless and defeated. Meditation, yoga and other activities like this can also offer you positive habits that will help you reach your goal.
